Find a Sponsor

Sponsorship in ACA can be tricky. A lot of us have "fear of authority figures" issues. Not only are we afraid to get a sponsor, we are afraid to BE sponsors. I know it took me a long time to find someone who was willing to sponsor me. Here are some tips that might help:
  • Don't give up. We have a lot of recovery in ACA membership.
  • In order to skirt the "fear of authority" thing, consider asking someone to "work through the steps" with you. Such verbiage might sound less threatening than, "Will you be my sponsor?"
  • "Want to co-sponsor each other?" is another good ACA "line". Working through the steps with a partner is more effective than reading the steps alone at home.
  • That being said, DO read the textbook's chapter on sponsorship (chapter 11).
  • Attend lots of meetings and look for people who have what you want, or at least someone who is sincerely working to get what you want. Sometimes, I wanted someone to be the mother I never had. When I stopped looking for a loving parent outside myself, I found someone to help me become my own loving parent.
